A Study in Failure, Part 2

God had called me to start my own specialized publishing company, growing out of our involvement in evangelism at our local church. We were to focus on reaching people who wouldn’t walk into a Christian bookstore and buy and read a book. (See “A Study in Failure, Part 1”.)

How do you get Christian materials into the hands of people who aren’t looking for them? One way is to provide such materials to Christ’s followers and partner with them in reaching the people they know. That’s the approach I felt led to take.

I wanted to provide more than a tract. If I were a non-believer, I wouldn’t be interested in catchy come-ons or scare tactics. Tracts are doubtless very effective with some, but I felt they wouldn’t work with me. I wanted to provide something more thought-provoking, something interesting and reasonable that would engage the mind.

So after much thought and prayer, Gloria and I came up with an idea for pocket-size books. Their trim size would be 3” X 4.5”, small enough to fit in a man’s shirt-pocket or a lady’s purse. Each book would be 64 pages—long enough to provide information and reasoning, but short enough to be easily and quickly read. We worked with an artist friend of mine, Paul Franitza, who gave them very attractive, full-color covers.

We priced them for quantity sale. We offered them in lots of 12, 40, and 100, with the price dropping to $1.00 per book for the 100-packs. Our plan was to market them to pastors, chaplains, and missionaries, as well as to interested individuals.

As I explained earlier, I am not an entrepreneur by nature. So having firmed up our idea, I approached my employer, a Christian publisher. I thought perhaps they might be interested in working with me on these books. I got a meeting with the president of the company, explained what I had in mind, and gave him everything in writing. Weeks of waiting turned into six months, and still no response whatsoever, despite reminders. Finally, I saw the handwriting on the wall and wrote him again, this time pulling the proposal off the table. In the end, however, they did agree to handle order fulfillment for us, and at a reasonable cost. They proved to be a real God-send in that area.

We needed a company name, and I was extremely conscious about finding one that would speak to non-believers picking up the books. I was determined to avoid anything like “Bible Thumpers International”. So we decided to use the name of the second series of mailers we had written for our local church evangelism program. “Living the Natural Way” thus became the name of the company. In daily usage, it was often shorted to “LNW”, which is the reason the book line eventually took the name “LNWbooks” and later, our hymns were published under “LNWhymns.com”.

To clarify the overall intent of our materials, we started using this phrase beneath the company name: “Innovative Resources for Drawing People to Christ”.

God had faithfully led us through the planning stages—concept, product, incorporation, order fulfillment, phone lines, pricing, and more. But the battle was just beginning.

A Study in Failure, Part 1

A few months ago I told the story of how God called my wife and me to involvement in our local church evangelism program. (See What Could You Do If Nothing Else Mattered? [scroll down] and What Could You Do if Nothing Else Mattered? cont.) I wrote monthly mailers as part of Neighbor to Neighbor, an effort to draw our church’s neighborhood to Christ.

As that program wound down, the Lord began speaking to me about continuing to draw people to Him. My training, gifts, and God-given interests are in writing and publishing. Yes, I want to stay available to God in all areas, and He does sometimes lead me into unfamiliar and uncomfortable territory. I thank Him for that. Life in God is an adventure, and I don’t want to fearfully draw borders around where I’ll follow Him. But I do find that the bulk of the work He leads me to do is in areas where He has called and prepared me. For me, that means writing and publishing.

So at this point, He had me thinking about how I could write and publish materials to draw people to Him. I thank God for Christian publishers and all the suppliers, distributors, and stores who work with them. I’ve spent my life in this field. But I also know that Christian bookstores effectively reach only a tiny part of the population. Over time, it became clear that God was calling me to provide materials for people who wouldn’t walk into a Christian bookstore and buy and read a book. He was calling me to start my own specialized publishing venture.

I am not an entrepreneur by nature! Some people are energized by the process of starting and building their own companies. Not me! Give me a steady job and a predictable routine.

What’s more, I know that publishing is a hectic business. Wow, do I know that! I’ve spent my life in a publishing office. You’re constantly loaded with more work than you can possibly handle. And by the time you have one success, you’re already late for the next one. Publishing programs are voraciously hungry and must be fed more often than a newborn. The pressure is relentless.

Add to that the demands of starting a new business, and I just didn’t see how I could possibly do it. What’s more, I had gone through a serious burnout less than ten years before. If you’ve ever had that experience, you know that once is enough. I simply couldn’t make myself face all that stress and overload again. I couldn’t! It’s like lying down in a blazing fire. You just can’t force yourself to do it.

I told the Lord that He had the wrong person. I told Him that I wanted to obey Him, but I just didn’t see how I could possibly start my own publishing company.

Then came one of those times of communication from the Lord that were crystal clear. Usually He guides me by strong impressions on my heart and mind. I’ve never heard His voice audibly, but on a few occasions He’s clearly spoken specific words in my heart.

This is what He said: “Do what I tell you to do one day at a time, and leave everything else to Me.” I’ve tried to live by that wisdom ever since.

My Life Is Pain

Based on Psalm 39

My life is pain, Lord.
I try to keep quiet about it
to keep from spreading my bitterness all around.
I don’t want to dishonor You, Lord.
But it boils in my mind,
and finally steam bursts out:

O Lord, help me to understand
how very brief life is—
for me, for all of us.
My life is a breath.
I live a few inches of time before You,
Almighty Creator.

We spend our entire lives here in vanity.
Like phantoms we hurry around
but do nothing.
We heap up wealth, respect, and goods,
only to leave them behind.
All is emptiness, O Lord—
vanity and emptiness.

What can I look to for meaning, my God?
I look to You.
I hope in You alone.
I accept my pain as from You, my Lord.
You use our troubles to correct us,
to enlighten us.
You turn all our efforts to nothing
so that we might turn to You.

I turn to You, Lord.
I am helpless.
I am in pain.
Everything else is emptiness.
I hope in You alone.

Secure

We go our own way.
We make our own plans
for our own reasons,
pursuing our own goals.
Then we build walls, protecting ourselves from every interference.
We are secure.
We are self-sufficient.
We can handle whatever comes.

But the unforeseen happens—it always does—
and we discover that no walls can keep out the evil that floods this world.
No matter how strong we are, we are vulnerable.
No matter how watchful we are, we are insecure.
We cannot control the reality that engulfs us.

But when our false security is stripped away,
we can rediscover the security on which creation itself rests—
the security that keeps the days and seasons revolving,
untouched and unthreatened by human hatred or pride.
We can rediscover that no matter what knowledge we accumulate,
God is our only wisdom.
No matter much power we try to harness,
God is sovereign.

He is love, and we are His children.
That is the only security we will ever have and
the only security we will ever need.

Faith: The Greatest Bargain in the Universe

I don’t normally post to this blog on Saturday. But all my blog entries are scheduled for the coming months, and I just had to share this little extra with you.

In preparation for a project I’m working on, I went through all the New Testament passages on faith. Wow—what a picture! What an incredible list of promises God makes to those who simply trust Him! And there are probably some I missed.

To help me digest it all, I quickly compiled the following list of blessings promised to those who trust God. As I got into it, I knew I just had to share it with you!

It may be too much to digest in one sitting. If so, come back to it and reflect on it a little at a time:

As we believe God,
as we believe that He is and that He rewards those who seek Him,
as we believe that Jesus is His Son and that God raised Him from the dead,
as we unite God’s word with faith,
as we entrust ourselves to Him:

  • We have eternal life: God’s boundless, timeless, endless life, here and now and forever. (numerous references)
  • We enter into God’s deep and endless rest. (Hebrews 4:3)
  • We can draw near to our Father God in full confidence. (Hebrews 10:22)
  • We are in the hands of the Great Healer. (numerous references)
  • We are children of God. (John 1:12 et al)
  • We will never hunger or thirst. (John 6:35-36)
  • We have the living water of the Spirit flowing within us. (John 7:38-39)
  • We know the truth, and the truth sets us free. (John 8:30-32)
  • We do the works of Christ and together, we do even greater works than He did. (John 14:10-12)
  • We will not be judged by Him. (numerous references)
  • We can move mountains (Matthew 17:20). All things are possible to us (Mark 9:33 et al).
  • All we have is His and thus is the common property of His people. (Acts 4:32 et al)
  • We are justified—declared by God to be completely innocent. (numerous references)
  • We have God’s own righteousness. (numerous references)
  • God cleanses our hearts. (Acts 15:9)
  • God enables us to obey Him. (Romans 1:5; 16:26)
  • He fills us with all joy and peace, and we abound in hope. (Romans 15:13)
  • We are sealed in Christ—marked as God’s very own and put under His protection. This sealing is by the Holy Spirit, who is our downpayment on our full redemption to come. (Ephesians 1:13-14)
  • The power of God that raised Christ from the dead is at work in us. (Ephesians 1:18-20)
  • We have been granted the great privilege of suffering for Christ’s sake. (Philippians 1:29)
  • The all-creating, all-powerful Word of God is doing its work within us. (1 Thessalonians 2:13)
  • We have an unchanging, unshakable hope for the future that is unthreatened even by death. (1 Thessalonians 4:14; 2 Timothy 1:12; et al)
  • We rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory. (1 Peter 1:8)
  • We are being built into a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, with Jesus Christ as the cornerstone. (1 Peter 2:4-7)
  • We know God’s love for us. (1 John 4:16)
  • Though surrounded by an evil world, we overcome. (1 John 5:4-5)

  • We have the joy and privilege of encouraging our fellow believers. (Romans 1:12 et al)
  • We are children of Abraham and thus heir to all God promised him. (Romans 4; Galatians 3; Genesis 12:1-3)
  • We have peace with God and full access to His boundless grace. (Romans 5:1-2)
  • Jesus Christ Himself lives in us. (Galatians 2:20; Ephesians 3:17)
  • God is perfecting us by faith. (Galatians 3:2, 5)
  • We are given beautiful, life-giving spiritual gifts to share with other believers. (Romans 12:3, 6)

  • The words of faith nourish us. (1 Timothy 4:6)
  • Our example of faith is a heritage that we pass on to our children and grandchildren. (2 Timothy 1:5)
  • We are fabulously rich, even when we are poor. (James 2:5)

A Single Step

My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.
(Exodus 33:14, NIV)

Lord, sometimes I’m scared to follow You.
What You ask–or what I’m afraid You’re asking—
seems overwhelming.
It seems beyond my ability and
beyond where I feel safe.

But I’m learning that You don’t ask the impossible.
Your demands aren’t complicated.
Each time You lead, all You ask is a single step of faith.
You ask for only one step at a time.

Right now, as You speak, Lord,
I look into Your face.
Jesus, I take that single step of faith.

Walk by Faith

We live by faith, not by sight. (2 Corinthians 5:7)

Do you long for a quiet, rock-solid stability in your life? Walk by faith, not by sight.

When problems come, keep your eyes on God. Don’t be distracted by worries and difficulties.

When spiritual dryness comes, continue to walk by faith. Live out your faith, even when you don’t feel it.

When your knowledge and ability to reason hit their limits, continue to trust God. Keep your mind set on Him who is himself the Light and the fountain of all truth.

Let simple trust lead the way when knowledge and emotion cannot.

Ministry by Numbers: Jesus’ Example

God has been teaching me not to measure my ministry by numbers. I find His perfect example of that in Jesus.

Read the gospel of John, and focus on what Jesus says about His relationship with His Father. You’ll be fascinated.

His only goal, His only ambition was to follow the Father.

“I do not seek my own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.” (John 5:30, NASB)

His food, His joy, His constant purpose was to please the Father.

“My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to accomplish His work.”

“He who sent Me has not left Me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to Him.” (John 4:34; 8:29, NASB)

His only resource, His only wisdom, strength, and adequacy was the Father. He simply said what the Father told Him to say and did what the Father showed Him to do. Nothing else. Nothing more, and nothing less.

“Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son does in like manner.”

“I do nothing on My own initiative, but I speak these things as the Father taught Me.”

“The word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father’s who sent Me.” (John 5:19; 8:28; 14:24, NASB)

As I read the gospels, I get the impression that of all the thousands that crowded around Jesus and witnessed His miracles, relatively few believed to the point of obedience. He never seemed concerned about numerical results. He measured His ministry only by obedience to the Father.

The Father is calling me to minister as Jesus did: to seek always and only to obey and please and rely completely on Him. For in the end, our fruitfulness depends entirely on our connection to Christ:

“I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5, NASB)

God Works through Us

From Him and through Him and to Him are all things.
(Romans 11:36, NASB)

Almighty God, unlimited in power,
delights to work through His creatures—
through angels (the word simply means “messengers”),
through human beings of all backgrounds and personalities,
through families, groups, races, and nations.

He works through
children and the aged,
warriors and sages,
rich and poor,
the weak and the powerful,
through those highly respected and
through the despised and ignored.

He uses both
joy and pain,
vast epochs and fleeting seconds,
wisdom and inexperience,
sickness and health,
the obvious and the mysterious,
the ordinary and the spectacular.
(Many such distinctions flow more from human ignorance than from eternal reality.)

Why would such a God,
infinite in resources and
without weakness or need,
choose to work through flawed and troublesome creatures like us?

Because He made us,
He knows us, and
He loves us.
As He shares His work with us,
we share more fully in Him.
We experience
His power,
His love, and
the privilege of being vessels of His ever-flowing, ever-giving life.

He is like a grandmother who asks her two-year old grandchild to
help her make cookies.
She doesn’t do it because she needs help with the cookies,
but to bring herself together with this growing person
in a common joy.
They’re still grandma’s cookies,
but the two have shared
a precious experience,
a common purpose, and
a bond that will outlast the lingering sweetness.

Simple Faith

You will keep in perfect peace
him whose mind is steadfast,
because he trusts in you.
(Isaiah 26:3, NIV)

In this world of darkness and uncertainty,
focus on the sure and certain path of faith.
The light shed by simple faith will warn you of the rocks
on which so many have shipwrecked.
They let themselves drift along the current of curiosity and imagination,
trusting only human guidance and
hungering for whatever is new.
Seek God alone, and
these perils are easily avoided.

See God’s hand in all the events of life.
Set aside your will,
misguided by ignorance and selfishness, and
love His will instead.
You’ll find that such simple faith brings
a clarity and beauty to life
that lasts through every storm.
