Do You Hear Him?

I will listen to what God the Lord will say,
for He promises peace to His people.

When we suffer,
God speaks to us in the midst of our trouble.
He wants to draw us out of our distress
into deliverance,
into a spacious place that is wide open and free.
He wants to lead us to a banquet table
filled with all the best food.
(Psalm 85:5; Job 36:15-16; para.)

Creation is God’s song about Himself.
Are you listening?

He speaks in the thunder.
Do you tremble at His majesty?

He speaks in a small whisper.
Don’t let your desires drown out His voice.

He speaks in the silence.
Are you resting in Him?

He speaks through pain and distress.
Do you still trust His tender love?

He speaks through a thousand daily pleasures,
calling you to find constant joy in Him.

Your Father is always speaking.
As you trust Him,
you will hear Him.

Father, help me to
hear and obey
every word You speak to me,
for each word is
loving and
wise and
for the best.

Listen for His Word

The voice of the Lord is over the waters;
the God of glory thunders…
The voice of the Lord is powerful;
the voice of the Lord is majestic.
The voice of the Lord twists the oaks
and strips the forests bare.
And in his temple all cry, “Glory!”
(Psalm 29:3-4, 9, NIV)

God spoke, and the universe came into being.
He didn’t need to shape it by His hands.
He is completely sovereign.
When He expresses His will, matter obeys.
He is the Lord of all reality.

Yet we seldom listen for His Word to us.
We rarely hunger for His perfect wisdom
or trust His unfailing love.
We chase what is too petty to satisfy us.
We seek security in what is weak and small and sure to pass away.
We refuse to fully face His greatness
and our utter helplessness.

Show me your ways, O Lord,
teach me your paths;
guide me in your truth and teach me,
for you are God my Savior,
and my hope is in you all day long. (Psalm 25:4-5, NIV)

You Speak

O Living God,
Almighty God,
Transcendent God,
from the silence of Your eternal completeness
You speak.
O Father, Your love never stops speaking.

You spoke this entire world into existence.
And through it, You speak Your presence with us.
You speak Your power,
Your wisdom,
Your boundlessness,
Your faithful care.
By Your speaking
You enfold us in all You are.

But You not only speak TO us, Almighty Father.
You speak THROUGH us.
Listening to Your servants, we hear
Your sovereign voice through
human lips.
You move us,
You enable us,
You inspire us to speak for You.

But Father, You speak
fully and
finally
through Your Son, Jesus Christ.
This human being always speaks with Your voice.
His words are purely Your words.
When He speaks,
all reality bows to His authority.

This Jesus Christ has filled us with
His own Spirit.
Through Him, You speak within our
hearts and
minds.
The same Voice that created the universe is now reverberating
throughout our entire beings.

O Living God,
Almighty God,
Transcendent God,
speak freely!
Speak Your will.
Speak Your love.
Speak Your holy life.
Speak Jesus Christ in me!
