Hungry for a Word

Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. (John 6:68, NIV)

Loving Father,
Living Truth,
You speak to me—
to me, Lord God.

Is my heart listening?

My life is hungry
for a Word,
for a Song, with harmony,
for a Dance
that will let my body and soul,
my deepest desires and disjointed days,
move together
with joy and ease and music.

Dance with me, Lord;
dance with me.
Sing,
and I will move to the music.
Speak a Word,
One Living Word.
I am listening.

When God Speaks

A reflection on Revelation 10:1-7,
the vision of the mighty angel

In God, reality is
bigger than we can imagine and
more glorious than we can picture.

His Word is the source of all existence.
All that is
only exists
because He commanded it.
Thus His promises are
more sure than our fiercest convictions,
more solid than anything we perceive with our senses,
more certain than tomorrow’s sunrise.

God Himself is power.
He Himself is wisdom.
He is light and truth and
faithfulness itself.
He is love
complete,
perfect, and
O so beautiful!

So when He speaks,
when the Creator and Lord of all speaks, be
quick to hear and
slow to speak (James 1:19).
His speaking is a great mercy.
His words are life.
Listen…
Listen!
Then throw aside your petty desires and plans and
grab His will with both hands.
Seek it wholeheartedly!
Obey Him
eagerly and
joyfully!

Follow Him
simply,
humbly,
one childlike step at a time.
That is all He ever asks.

We Are Listening

Father, You have called us here, and
we have come.

You have honored us with Your presence, and
we bow before You.

You are speaking.
The same voice that called the universe out of nothing and
filled it with
life,
love, and
beauty
is now speaking
to us and
in us.

We are quiet, Lord.
We are waiting.
We are listening.

Listen for His Word

The voice of the Lord is over the waters;
the God of glory thunders…
The voice of the Lord is powerful;
the voice of the Lord is majestic.
The voice of the Lord twists the oaks
and strips the forests bare.
And in his temple all cry, “Glory!”
(Psalm 29:3-4, 9, NIV)

God spoke, and the universe came into being.
He didn’t need to shape it by His hands.
He is completely sovereign.
When He expresses His will, matter obeys.
He is the Lord of all reality.

Yet we seldom listen for His Word to us.
We rarely hunger for His perfect wisdom
or trust His unfailing love.
We chase what is too petty to satisfy us.
We seek security in what is weak and small and sure to pass away.
We refuse to fully face His greatness
and our utter helplessness.

Show me your ways, O Lord,
teach me your paths;
guide me in your truth and teach me,
for you are God my Savior,
and my hope is in you all day long. (Psalm 25:4-5, NIV)

Lord, I Am Listening

Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening. (1 Samuel 3:9, NIV)

What a great encouragement when I learned for myself that God delights to speak to us. He knows how to speak to us, and He will speak to us. We don’t have to strain to hear Him or work up just the right frame of mind.

But He doesn’t shout. We need to listen.

He doesn’t insist. We need to obey. He will let us ignore Him if we choose.

We need to read the Bible with our heart and mind tuned to listen and to obey Him.

Speak, Lord.
I am listening.
