Living in God

Father, You are transcendent,
above all need and
all insufficiency.
Thus You are peace, and
trusting You brings us into Your peace.
As our grasping surrenders to You,
we are sufficient in You in every circumstance
as Christ was sufficient in You.

In You, we are without need.
We are fearless and free to love as You love,
selflessly and lavishly.
We are free for joy.
We are free for sacrifice.
We are free for fruitful living in You.
We are free to live as Christ lived,
from and
through and
unto You.

Father,
teach me to live in all the
freedom and
completeness
that comes from trusting
Jesus Christ.

Please Yourself, Lord

My Lord Jesus,
I am amazed at
how much life You have breathed into my deadness,
how much loving wisdom into my selfish ignorance,
how much consistency,
how much holiness,
how much of Yourself You have grown in me.

Loving Lord,
Almighty God,
Merciful Friend,
this is my prayer today:

Please Yourself in me.
Wrap Yourself around my thoughts,
permeate my feelings,
seize my heart,
energize all You have made me.
Fulfill in me
all that Your wisdom has planned and
all that Your love has dreamed.

Lord, please Yourself fully in me today.

Reborn

from the book, ONE WITH OUR FATHER

John 3:1-21

Lord God, I cannot be who I want to be,
who I need to be,
by my own efforts.
No self-discipline,
no determination
can make me who I am not.
Only Your cleansing can make me clean.
Only Your holiness can make me holy.
Only Your life can make me Your child.
Only You can make me
like You,
sharing in You,
one with You.

Your life, Your breath, Your Spirit
is like the wind:
I can sense it, but I cannot
fully track it or
control it.
Your Spirit is Your life in motion.
He goes where You please.
He is who You are.

Lord, I see Him most fully and beautifully
in the life of the human Christ.
I watch as You and He, Father and Son, share
the same Spirit,
the same life,
the same power,
the same wisdom,
the same self-giving love.
As I see Jesus,
I long to be one with You
as He is one with You,
fully, constantly, forever.

Father, I am completely unworthy of You.
But since You deeply desire it,
come, be my Father
as fully as You were His Father.
Do this as it pleases You,
when it pleases You,
how it pleases You.
Blow as You will,
Wind of God,
Breath of God.
I will do the little that I can do and must do:
I will trust You.

Father, this is what I want:
to live and breathe forever
in Your personal presence,
constantly,
completely,
unchangeably
one with You.

How Much of a God?

I’m convinced that a question lurks down inside each of us that we’d like to ask God. We’ve probably never formulated this question in our minds, much less in our mouths, but I think our hearts ask it. As we seek God in the face of our needs, whether big or small, we probe for an answer:

How much of a God are You willing to be in my life?

I believe God exists up there somewhere. I believe He is real, that He forgave my sins, and that someday He’ll bring me to heaven. But I have needs now, especially on the inside. I want to know what He is really willing to do and be in me. How much of a practical part can He play, or will He play, in my daily life? For example:

  • I have anxieties that waste my energy and destroy my peace of mind.
  • I need guidance and wisdom in a thousand hourly decisions and problems, big and small. Uncertainty and inadequacy eat away at me.
  • The same old temptations keep returning, and they’re hard to face. Can I really be the victor every time and escape all the guilt and frustration that failure brings?
  • Can I be free from self-centeredness to be thoroughly loving all the time?
  • Am I good enough? Am I who I should be, and can I ever totally please God?

I’ve been a Christian for more than fifty years, and I grasp for such answers. I want to know how constant and how sufficient God will be in all such areas.

But I continue to make exciting discoveries. I’m finding that whenever I turn to Him with anything, no matter how daily or small, He is there, my refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1, NASB).

When I remember to take my problems to Him, specifically, simply, openly, I find Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us (Ephesians 3:20, NASB).

I find a God who constantly prompts me to speak to Him; who hears and understands every murmur of my heart, every unspoken question, every secret shame; who longs to draw me closer and never stops forgiving me; who, for His part, will never let anything come between us.

And I realize that if any silence is in my life and in my relationship with Him, He is not the silent One. The silence is from my own preoccupation with other things. It is the silence of my indifference to Him. It is the silence of my unbelief.

What needs does your Father see you face, yet never hear you share with Him? What concerns does He deeply feel with you that you never bring to Him?

How many simple prayers would our God gladly, beautifully, bountifully answer if we simply prayed them?

How much of a God am I willing to let Him be?

Having the Truth Within

It is not enough to know the Truth.
I want to live in the Truth.

When pride starts to creep in,
I want to continue to live in the Truth about
Who You are and
who I am.

When lust calls,
I want to continue to live in the Truth about
what is best and
what pleases You.
I want to pursue true pleasure and true love.

When anxiety starts to gnaw on me,
I want to live in the Truth of
Your love,
Your sovereignty, and
Your presence.

My mind so easily forgets the Truth in such moments.
I need to be filled with the Spirit of Truth.
My life is hid with Christ in God, and
I want Christ to be my living, constant
wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption
(1 Corinthians 1:30, NASB).

I want to walk always, second by second,
mind, heart, and body,
in wisdom from above
which is pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable,
full of mercy and good fruits,
unwavering, without hypocrisy.
I want to daily sow the seed whose fruit is righteousness (James 3:17-18, NASB).

O Lord, my loving Lord,
be that wisdom in me always, forever,
from here throughout eternity.
Be that righteousness, that sanctification.
Be the Truth in me,
setting me free to be and do all that You desire.
Constantly breathe in me the mind and spirit of Christ.

In Christ

To me, to live is Christ. (Philippians 1:21, NIV)

Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. (Colossians 3:1-3, NIV)

Salvation is not so much what Christ does as what He is. All the blessings that come to us through Christ – love, peace, joy, and more – are His own personal characteristics. They do not come to us as a “something”, wrapped up and handed to us. They come as He comes to us and unites His Spirit with ours. They come in Him.

There is a living union with Christ that can best be described as being in Him. It is a union that began in the heart of our Father before the foundation of the world.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing.
He chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world
to be holy and blameless before Him.
In Him we have redemption through his blood.
In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance.
In him you…were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit.
(Ephesians 1:3, 4, 7, 11, 13 NRSV)

In Christ the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, and you have come to fullness in him. (Colossians 2:9-10, NRSV)

Like all the blessings of salvation, living in Christ comes to us by grace, through faith (Ephesians 2:8). Our union with Him is a living, ongoing relationship of trust. We are one with Him as we trust Him. It’s that simple.

Brother or sister in Christ, share with me this one deep longing and constant goal: to live every moment in Christ, trusting Him, now and forever.
